本来要去美国访学的中国证监会青年分析师芦靖生被派到兰考扶贫，不想和县委副书记范中州（宋佳伦饰）成了一对“冤家”。这个一心想在学术中寻找中国农村出路的热血青年碰上了一个从基层一步步走来的“土八路”顶头上司，范中州12年前陪老书记去北京戴上了“贫困县”的帽子。芦靖生自告奋勇前往县里最贫困的村庄——坝庄担任第一书记。这个一腔热血的理想主义青年在坝庄屡屡碰壁，情绪沮丧到了极点，感叹现实是铁板一块，无法改变，甚至萌生了逃走的念头。他和女友的感情危机也合并爆发，芦靖生濒临崩溃的边缘。黄河最后一拐弯的大地上，芦靖生为代表的扶贫干部们如何突围，兰考如何浴火重生，答案，就在每个人的选择中出现了……。Charlie talks wealthy farmer's daughter Tillie into eloping with him (and taking her father's money).
