故事是关于一名13岁的学校万人迷Calvin Wheeler，他是一本英雄漫画的超级粉丝。为了得到一本限量珍藏初版漫画，Calvin 打算参加一个冠军奖金达到五千美元的狗展比赛，于是他到附近的动物收容所领养流浪狗Tyco 参赛，这对组合在初赛的成绩一鸣惊人。前两届比赛的冠军Preston Price 恐怕受到威胁，于是设法令Calvin 在决赛中落败。Calvin 的同学兼动物收容所义工 Emily Watson 本身对狗展比赛十分反感，当她知道Calvin 领养Tyco 的目的后，对Calvin 十分失望，但Calvin 的好友Raymond Figg 告知她Calvin 在饲养 Tyco 后变得不再像以前般势利，而且有责任感，Emily 开始对他改观。当她知道 Preston 的诡计后，Emily 不但鼓励刚打算放弃比赛的Calvin 重新参赛，...。Joseph Fulton, a well-regarded fifty-eight-year-old director of romantic comedies, wants to become assistant groundskeeper at a local cemetery.
