故事发生在解放前的北京。丐帮首领牛二爷整天带一帮泼皮横行市井，孙豆汁因没孝敬牛二，豆汁摊被牛二捣毁，儿子孙六血气方刚，非要找牛二拼命。烤肉铺刘掌柜与孙六同时相中李窝脖的闺女李淑英，无奈孙六人穷志短，只好加入丐帮，仰仗牛二势力摆平了刘掌柜。孙豆汁见儿子当了混混，一气之下将他赶出家门，淑英见孙六如此不争气，只好皈依了佛门。谷掌柜与刘掌柜结怨已久，牛二为从中渔利，关键时刻出卖了孙六。孙六看透了牛二险恶用心，他抢走牛二的龙鞭，在祖始爷帮衬下成为了混混首领。上任伊始，他带人砸了刘掌柜的烤肉店，孙豆汁扬言要跟孙六断绝父子关系......。The subtitle of Jean-Marie Straub and Danièle Huillet’s first feature, from 1965, “Only Violence Helps Where Violence Reigns,” suggests the fierce political program evoked by their rigorous aesthetic. The pretext of the film, set in Cologne, is Heinrich Böll’s novel “Billiards at Half Past Nine,” which they strip down to a handful of stark events and film with a confrontational angularity akin to Bartók’s music that adorns the soundtrack. The subtlest of cues accompany the story’s complex flashbacks. The middle-aged Robert Fähmel tells a young hotel bellhop of persecutions under the Third Reich| his elderly father, Heinrich, an architect famed for a local abbey, recalls the militarism of the First World War, when his wife, Johanna, incurred trouble for insulting the Kaiser. A third-generation Fähmel is considering architecture, just as the exiled brother of Robert’s late wife, returns, only to be met by their former torturer, now a West German official taking part in a celebratory parade of war veterans. Straub and Huillet make the layers of history live in the present tense, which they judge severely. The tamped-down acting and the spare, tense visual rhetoric suggest a state of moral crisis as well as the response—as much in style as in substance—that it demands.。
